Robert M. Coates, The Eater Of Darkness
(cover by Milton Glaser)

Now best known as an art critic for The New Yorker (he coined the term "Abstract Expressionism") Coates' first novel, The Eater Of Darkness, was published in Paris in 1926, by Robert McAlmon's Contact Press. Dedicated to Gertrude Stein, Fantomas and a dozen other individuals, fictional as well as real, it is often considered the first Surrealist novel written in English.
