Featured: The Message: Art & Occultism

The Message: Art & Occultism
Text by André Breton, Claudia Dichter, Andreas Fischer.
Hardcover, Illustrated boards
Kunstmuseum Bochum

"Occult practices, séances and magic have traditionally been met with suspicion in the world of high culture, but they are currently getting a fresh look. Turns out, they have long had a quiet influence on art--at least since the mid-1800s. The Message demonstrates this fascinating history with paranormal-influenced paintings, drawings and thought photographs, a term for the phenomenon of imprinting an image from one’s mind directly onto a photographic medium--something we’ve all at least wished we could do... By the early eighteenth century, the occult had found a home in the arts with the advent of Surrealism--in 1933, André Breton discussed these inexplicable phenomena in his text, The Automatic Message. This publication borrows its name from Breton’s text; and features early-twentieth-century photographs of séances from the archive of parapsychologist Albert von Schrenck-Notzing, which vividly illustrate Breton’s ideas."

"Daydream is the latest creation from Keiichi Tanaami, the instantly recognizable master of Japanese psychedelia. Deeply affected by hallucinations associated with an illness he experienced, Keiichi Tanaami’s work contains obsessive motifs gleaned from his personal life — garishly colorful women and goldfish, pine trees, waves and cranes.
Although actively and continuously creative since The 1960's, he continues to exert a considerable influence on young contemporary artists as well as other creative professionals in Japan, and now the world. His impressive output and influence has spilled over in the fields of animation, illustration, editorial design and fashion.

New Arrivals: Urban Animals by Fred Tomaselli

Fred Tomaselli, Urban Animals
Stapled wrappers, 1981
$695.00

Tomaselli's self-published zine from 1981. Freaking rare. The only mention online other than this copy, is on Tomaselli's Facebook page, where some girl obsesses over finding a copy, and some dude sadistically crows about the copy Fred gave him years ago.
Printed in black & white and published by the artist. Whites of the paper barely yellowed; a tiny, barely noticeable 1/4 inch stain at top edge of back cover, otherwise a bright, clean copy.

New Arrivals: School

School Vols. 1 & 2, edited by Maki Hakui
Paperback

"School is dedicated to reporting about the lives of women, especially Japanese women in general, and also art, culture, lifestyle, and history of Japan. School delivers interviews and writings about women who are either leading, have led, or aspire to lead beautiful lives full of creativity and energy without giving up on their search for individuality and inner peace. The subjects are wide, from established professional artists chosen from the past and present, to aspiring creators and typical working women in Tokyo. But all of them share the spirit of a rebel whose intentions are sincere and honest. At the same time, School sheds light on different themes, events, and aspects of Japan that the editor feels is worthwhile; but often overlooked or not deeply researched and covered by the overseas media. Overall, the aim of School is to inform the unknown, inspire, and to cross all boundaries to think together: Where are we heading? How should we live?"
