Featured: Hans Arnold's Monsterland
Hans Arnold, Monsterland
A translation of Swiss-Swedish artist Hans Arnold's 1964 classic, Monsterland. Like Edward Gorey, his work marries the supposedly innocent world of juvenile literature with a more macabre sensibility, but with a more freewheeling hippie vibe. Also like Gorey, his work freaked the hell out of folks, especially children who weren't sure if they were supposed to be reading his books or not. Of course now he is much loved, with, one would assume, an industry of coffee mugs, underoos, and other merchandise tie-ins.
