Jakob & Sus/ Jakob Olausson

Rafi Bookstaber

Sus & Jakob/ Jakob Olausson (Sweden/Denmark)
"People who've seen them play have mentioned Patty Waters, Linda Sharrock, Brother Ahh, Strange Strings etc as reference points for the drooling gawkers. It sure is recalling the homeburned jazz sounds of the past. They play French horn, Flutes and saxophonic vocals over soothing harplike tidal waves."
"Jakob Olausson is best known, if at all, for his sub-radar activities with Sweden’s Joshua Jugband 5 (check yr Slippytown back catalogue for more of that brand of boo) but this, his first solo LP, is a whole other bucket of flesh. Moonlight Farm is one of the most beautifully nocturnal and disconcertingly intimate broadcasts to make it out of the heart of the wood since Joshua’s Gold Cosmos. The overall atmosphere has the same kind of early electric feel as MV’s Maximum Arousal recordings, while Olausson’s evocatively double-tracked vocals move from a weighted down Skip Spence/Ben Chasny hybrid to a pro-denim and leather Leonard Cohen (or does that make him Jim Morrison?). His songs cross endless tranced dirges with drones that are so lunar they illuminate the entire horizon and huge distorto-smears of backing vox that sound like tiny fists crushing the light from stars. Some of the instrumentals here are so evocatively conceived – beautifully reconciling handmade DIY traditions and higher-minded bliss – that they sound positively Japanese...But it’s the songs you’ll keep coming back to, elegiac teleports to the fringes of a whole other evocatively conceived universe, where every breath births reverberant shadows and the map of yr desires reads like a mirror of the constellations. ~ David Keenan

Featured: Rangoon

Frederick Barthelme and Mayo Thompson, Rangoon

Trade Paperback $38.00

Hardcover $75.00

Frederick Barthelme may be known in the literary world as a practicioner of Southern minimalism but in the late 60s he was a member of the Red Krayola. Their debut, "Parable of Arable Land", is a glorious demented rock classic, adding to the rich Texas freak mainline of 13th Floor Elevators, Cold Sun to Butthole Surfers and Stickmen with Rayguns. Barthelme may have departed the band after the initial blast, but he's reunited with Krayloa bandleader Mayo Thompson on this scarce 1970 colaboration. Barthelme penned this bizarre tale and Thompson added clean pen and inked illustrations. A rarely seen oddity, this would look superb on your mantle next to an OG "Corky's Debt to His Father" LP.

Space Invasion!

Have you ever been trounced by Turbo? Bested by Battlezone? Flattened by Frogger?
Never again!

Martin Amis' 1982 Invasion of the Space Invaders, "An Addict's Guide to Battle Tactics, Big Scores, and the Best Machines," is here to help! The playfully sardonic tome, with an introduction by Steven Spielberg, is your key to unlocking all the most beloved games of early pixelated entertainment. The book also begins with a highly amusing short history of the birth of video games.

EVENTS: Friday. June 5th: Tom Carter, Shawn McMillen, Steve Gunn

Fox's Book of Martyrs, 1782, available at Brickbat Books

Friday, June 5th at 8PM:
Tom Carter
Shawn McMillen
Steve Gunn

Tom Carter is a guitar player best known for his work with acclaimed psych-drone iconoclasts Charalambides. Since 2000, however, he has become increasingly active as not only a solo artist but as a collaborator. He has performed with improvising musicians as diverse as Thurston Moore, Jandek, Tetuzi Akiyama, Matt Valentine, and many others, as well as being a key member in groups like Badgerlore (with Ben Chasny of 6 Organs of Admittance), Friday Group, Mudsuckers (with Robert Horton and the Yellow Swans), and Zaika (with Marcia Bassett of the Double Leopards and Hototogisu).
Carter's solo work covers a lot of territory, but latter-day sightings show him to be concentrating on looped guitar drones of immensely stacked tonal collisions, with heaps of psychedelic melodic content missing from the repertoires of many noise and drone bands."

Shawn David McMillen:
“shares the peculiar sense of temporal and topographical resonance that exemplifies the soporific, glazed music created by artists from Texas. Through their music references psychedelia (a notionally 'placeless' aesthetic), there is something very specific about the manifestations of place and space in Texas psych….” (The Wire)

Steve Gunn:
"Steve Gunn walked the streets of Philadelphia growing up, and for a
while now calls Brooklyn home
He's perhaps best known for the major role he plays in the group GHQ.
His recent solo work is a mix of improvisational and blues acoustics
and he also is currently working with an electric rock band that is
trying to sound like a cross between void and quicksilver messenger
service."
