FEATURED: The African Writers Series edited by Chinua Achebe

The African Writers Series was originally edited by Chinua Achebe and published by Heinemann beginning in 1962. It has published some of the most important African authors of the post-colonial period; its ambition seems to be nothing less the complete documentation of African contemporary literature. There appear to be hundreds of titles, covering writing from Egypt to Nigeria to South Africa. The series was originally published in paperback to make it more affordable to the masses with the cover art and design of the books reflecting the politically engaged nature of the project. Sure, there might be some crap in here, but there's brilliant stuff as well. We're talking about a whole generation finding its voice, and assuming it's also the voice of a whole continent.

EVENTS: Sunday, August 3rd, HISS GOLDEN MESSENGER

Sunday, August 3rd at 8pm:

HISS GOLDEN MESSENGER
ANIARA

Hiss Golden Messenger
Claims of a "countrified Ash Ra Tempel" sound dubious, but there's defintely an air of kosmiche exploration admist the shuffling folk and low-key boogie. Not sure if it's gonna be one guy or many. Surprisingly, ex-Court and Spark.

Aniara
Aniara are Alan Pavlica and Jesse Trbovich on analog electronics and space guitar. While you may recognize these gregarious longhairs from collaborations with Kurt Vile, Meg Baird, and Beat Jams (to name but a few), here they set the controls for the heart of the sun with deep cosmic meditations for those whose third eyes relish "Alpha Centuari"-era Tangerine Dream (minus the egomania) or "Affenstunde"-era Popul Vuh (minus the "ethnic" drums).

EVENTS: Saturday. Aug 2nd: SUSAN ALCORN, BLOOD LIKE MINE, ADORATION,

This Saturday, August 2nd at 8pm:
SUSAN ALCORN
BLOOD LIKE MINE
ADORATION

SUSAN ALCORN:
Susan Alcorn is a composer, improvisor, and pedal steel guitarist active in contemporary music and free improvisation. She combines the techniques of country-western pedal steel with her own extended techniques to form a personal style influenced by free jazz, avant-garde classical music, Indian ragas, Indigenous traditions, and various folk musics of the world.
"From the relatively unadorned sound of pedal steel and amplifier, Susan Alcorn brings forth music that is as full of emotional honesty as it is of melodic and harmonic exploration and surprise. She possesses a virtuosic technique that is always at the service of the musical moment and its possibilities for expression and communication."
- Kevin McNeil Brown, Dusted Magazine

"Alcorn's pedal steel tones, stretch, float, and dance in the air, and on the ears, expressing something that's worlds beyond words, yet able to communicate on the deepest level."
- Peter Gershon, Signal to Noise

"Alcorn is a rare musician who embraces the full spectrum of expressive possibilities for an instrument to communicate a full human experience instead of a restricted aesthetic paradigm. She's a maverick and her solo recordings are destined to become classics that we turn to year after year for relief from common music."
- Michael Anton Parker, Downtown Music Gallery

Susan has performed at the London Musician's Collective's Festival of Experimental Music, the Birmingham Improv Festival, Musique Action Festival, Leipzig JazzTage, Subtonic and CBGB's in New York, Ateliers Tampon in Paris, and at Il Continiere in Rome.

Though mostly a solo performer, she has collaborated with numerous artists including Pauline Oliveros, Eugene Chadbourne, Peter Kowald, Chris Cutler, Joe Giardullo, Caroline Kraabel, Le Quan Ninh, Sean Meehan, Joe McPhee, LaDonna Smith, Mike Cooper, Misha Feigin, Ellen Fullman, and Johanna Varner.

Susan currently lives in Baltimore, Maryland.
