Charles Ray (New HB) Scalo $19.95
"The superbly executed art of Charles Ray—compared at times to the Pop art of Andy Warhol but more aligned with minimalist and conceptual art—is discussed in detail in this catalog from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and shown in 27 large color plates and many smaller images within the text. Here are his mannequin-like self-portrait and other figures both highly stylized and startlingly real; the 1993 work Fire Truck, a life-sized sculpted vehicle that looks like a child's toy; and Unpainted Sculpture, an automobile twisted in a fatal accident that Ray meticulously duplicated in plain gray fiberglass."

Andres Serrano: America (New HB) Taschen $19.95

Gego: Sabiduras and Other Texts (New HB) $29.95
"The German-born Venezuelan artist Gego (1912–1994) was renowned for her abstract drawings, prints, dimensional works, hanging net pieces, and wire constructions. In 1999, a folder was found in a trunk that had belonged to Gego, with the word Sabiduras (loosely translated as "Words of Wisdom") written on the cover, containing previously unknown texts, word poems, and notes by the artist. The texts collected in this book are published in both English and Spanish (and in some cases German, which was Gego's native language) and are preceded by introductory notes. Reproductions of some of the original texts, plans for unfulfilled projects, and previously unpublished photographs are seen in 47 color illustrations."

FEATURED: FOX's BOOK OF MARTYRS

THE NEW AND COMPLETE BOOK of MARTYRS, OR, AN Universal History of Martyrdom: BEING FOX's BOOK OF MARTYRS, Revised and Corrected, with Additions and Great Improvements

by the Rev. John Fox; Revised Corrected and Improved by Paul Wright

(HB FOLIO Published by Alex Hogg, Paternoster Row, London. Printed by M Allen, Paternoster Row, 1784.)

$450.00

Copiously illustrated with 39 full-page plates. What appears to be the 1802 Paternoster edition of Fox's Book of Martyrs, revised by Paul Wright. Record of Faith or Catalog of Intolerance, the volume is perhaps all the more compelling, for the abuse it has survived. Rebound by institutions, attacked by rats, flogged by the elements, The book has somehow manage to survive, almost intact. The first and last few pages have disappeared. The rest may be there, although it is almost impossible to tell, because of the documented eccentricity of the numbering of the pages. A piece of History that has somehow managed to survive History.

FEATURED: MARK BEYER COMIX

Mark Beyer, along with Gary Panter, Charles Burns, and Kaz was originally published in Art Spiegelman and Francoise Mouly's RAW Magazine. His comic strips depicted an existential, nightmare world populated by horrific monsters and unspeakable cruelty. The two protagonists, Amy and Jordan existed in a constant state of fear and boredom, often being poisoned, dismembered, infected with plague, and yet always surviving to be deposited in their shabby little apartment, only to be tormented anew in the next installment. The art itself was greatly influenced by folk art, obsessively patterned, symmetrical, with elaborate border designs and characters and objects drawn from basic geometric shapes. Beyer disappeared after the demise of RAW, but in 2004 was rediscovered by design king-pin Chip Kidd, who brought out a collection of Beyer's work on Pantheon (for sale below.)

EVENTS: MEG BAIRD and IGNATZ LIVE. WED. JUNE 11th.

Wednesday, June 11th at 8PM
at BRICKBAT BOOKS:

IGNATZ, MEG BAIRD, THE OSPREYS

IGNATZ
Appalachian old-timey folk ala John Fahey re-imagined as outer space blues by Brussels-based solo artist Bram Devens.

"Alien musical transmissions intercepted using an old victrola and played back by some crazy old man, sitting on his porch, armed with just an acoustic guitar, a pile of busted old wax cylinders, and a huge bank of broken and rusty effects pedals... So goddamn great!" (Aquarius Records)

"...his impassioned mantras of faith and devotion from behind the crackled veil of a prewar blues 78. But as Ignatz II again demonstrates, Devens has proven regularly able to re-interpret these borrowed texts in his own singular fashion, his handmade bricks again gloriously shaped, baked, and thrown." (Pitchforkmedia)

MEG BAIRD
'Voice, guitar, songs. Hearts break, folks die, crops wither...'

OSPREYS:
'...exploratory music project operated by michael w. hall and tom bubul.'
