EVENTS: Friday. Aug 22nd: MIKE TAMBURO, TUSK LORD, HUNTED CREATURES, ERIC CARBONARA
THIS FRIDAY, AUGUST 22nd at BRICKBAT at 8PM:
Pittsburgh-based Mike Tamburo has been an increasingly prolific presence on the underground scene since the late 1990s, initially with the groups Meisha and Arco Flute Foundation, more recently as a solo artist. While his previous bands mostly operated in a space-rock/ambient post-rock territory, Mike's solo work usually begins with the hammered dulcimer or the acoustic guitar; inspired by American folk traditions, he expands outward to include influences from avant-garde to noise to modern compositional music. A Tamburo performance often includes both subtle fingerpicked guitar and swirling walls of sound generated by a raft of effects, and is always a very transportive experience. Tamburo is also an artist, film maker, thinker and runs the New American Folk Hero label, which continues to release an eclectic roster of creative and experimental musics. - http://www.myspace.com/tamburo
music of unexplored forests, clouds gathering on the horizon, and rocky foothill paths, all viewed through a filter than lends an unnatural veneer to the terrain. It's music of the earth, imperfect and unpolished, and all the more beautiful for it." - Adam Strohm.
"...this is really not noise in the traditional sense but the thick lava flow of droning buzz and carefully layered gusts of hiss and screech most certainly nod in that direction. To my ears it sounds a bit like Sunroof! on valium, and if anyone wonder[s], I do consider such a comment to be a great compliment." --- Broken Face (Sweden)
Eric Carbonara is a Philadelphia based multi-instrumentalist & recording engineer, whose search for raw aural expression has led him far and wide – from noise & electro-acoustic music to taking deep root in the bounty of the wooden guitar.
Carbonara's playing draws on the rich musical styles from Andalusian Roma-Flamenco to Hindustani & North African folk to form a kind of exalted pidgin style of playing that covers a wide emotional terrain from meditative calm to restless unease.
His live solo performances range from contemplative acoustic meditations to aggressively loud electric sets. Carbonara is a regular collaborator in the improvisational outfit, Evil Eye Sound System & plays with the Philly psych-rock group, Soft People.
